Meeting at Penn Station

Amtrak recommends that passengers arrive at their departure station at least 30 minutes before their scheduled departure. Please plan on being at Penn Station in Manhattan by 8.30am that morning. We will meet at that time under the large clock in Moynihan Train Hall:

Each member is responsible for arranging and paying for her/his own travel to and from Manhattan. Some members may choose to travel together that morning.

Cost

The Amtrak tickets cost $17.60 roundtrip per person. Each adult member participating in the temple trip should pay this amount to the Jamaica 1st Ward. You may do so using a Tithing and Other Offerings form; write โ€œtemple tripโ€ under Other on the form. (Online payment through the churchโ€™s donations portal is not available for this payment.)

The Jamaica 1st Ward will cover the cost for all youth participating in the temple trip.

Travel from the station to the temple

It is exactly 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from the entrance of 30th Street Station in Philadelphia to the entrance of the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple. The walk normally takes approximately 23 minutes, though with a larger group it may take longer. It is generally considered an easy walk, with no significant changes in elevation.

The ward has arranged with some members with mobility needs to provide travel via ridesharing between the station and the temple.

Any other members may arrange, at their own expense, taxi or ridesharing travel between the station and the temple.

Ordinances

The ward has scheduled the temple baptistry at 12.15pm that day for baptisms and confirmations. The ward has also reserved 30 seats in the noon endowment session. Endowed adult members may choose which ordinances they would like to participate in. All youth and unendowed members will be invited to the baptistry and may participate in baptisms and confirmations.

Please let Bishop Joyce know which ordinance you would like to participate in.

Clothing

  • Endowed members are invited to bring their own temple clothing.
  • Clothing rental is available at the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple for members who do not own their own clothing. The rental fee is around $5, which members should pay for themselves.
  • Temple clothing will be provided for youth and others participating in baptisms and confirmations.
  • Remember that the temple is the House of the Lord. When we attend the temple, we should dress the same way we would as when we go to church.
  • If you wish to change into more casual clothing after leaving the temple, restroom facilities are available in the waiting area adjacent to the temple where you may change.

Lunch

There will be ample time between work at the temple and the return train to New York for lunch. Adult members will be responsible for providing and/or paying for their own lunch. The ward may make arrangements for lunch for youth.

There will be a cafe car onboard the Amtrak trains (view the menu in PDF here).

Youth

  • Roundtrip rail fare for all youth will be paid for by the Jamaica 1st Ward.
  • All youth will be invited to the temple baptistry and may participate in baptisms and confirmations.
  • The ward may make arrangements for lunch for the youth.
  • Youth who do not have a parent participating in the temple trip will need to have a parent or guardian sign a permission form, which will be provided to youth prior to the trip.
