Help us deliver donations to Queens food pantries

Wednesday, May 3, 2023

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in partnership with the office of Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr., is donating $50,000 worth of food, toiletries, household items, and other supplies to five food pantries across Queens โ€” and we need your help making sure these goods get to our community.

On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, we invite you to join other members of our community as we unload the donations at Queens Borough Hall. From there, the donations will be delivered directly to the food pantries, where we need more help to unpack the items and get them on shelves, ready for distribution to our neighbors in need.

Updates

  • 27 April 2023, 12.23
    • Updated arrival time for volunteers at borough hall to 8:15am
    • Added note that parking at borough hall is limited and that we encourage volunteers to take transit
    • Added exact parking lot where unloading will take place at borough hall
    • Updated volunteer sign-up form to ask volunteers’ organization affiliation, if any
    • Updated flyer and added additional full-color version

How you can help

There are two main ways volunteers can help in this effort:

  1. Help unload the truck when it arrives at Queens Borough Hall. The truck will arrive that morning from the church’s storehouse in New Jersey. The donations will be organized on pallets and by pantry. But it will be a lot of items โ€” upwards of 20 pallets and an estimated 15,000 pounds โ€” so we’ll need a lot of help getting it off the truck.
  2. Help unload and unpack deliveries at individual food pantries across Queens. From Queens Borough Hall, the donations will be transported to the five food pantries. They’ll need help unloading and unpacking their items and putting them on shelves, ready for distribution to the community.

If you have access to a vehicle, some of the pantries may need assistance transporting their items from borough hall to their own facilities. Other equipment, such as pallet jacks or hand trucks, may also help the process move faster. You can indicate what equipment you have on the volunteer sign-up form.

Timeline

Tentatively, we expect the day to go about like this:

8:15amVolunteers gather at Queens Borough Hall and the truck arrives from New Jersey. We estimate unloading will take approximately 2 hours.
11:45amVolunteers gather at food pantries as individual deliveries arrive.
